Jamie Gold Faces Jackpot-Sized Headaches From WSOP Win
Jamie Gold, a former talent agent and manager, is the most recent winner of the World Series of Poker, making him earn the richest prize in the history of the game at $12 million.
Gold beat out more than 8,700 entrants in the Main Event of the WSOP in Las Vegas, putting the television development executive out of the sidelines and into the spotlight. Gold's road to winning though, was not paved with good intentions.
Gold did not return to Hollywood immediately with his gargantuan winning, instead, he has been lying low and struggling with scandal and security worries that comes with winning a pot that big.
As early Day 3, upon getting the chip lead at the main event in the WSOP, Gold said that he has been told that threats have been made against him, though tournament officials haven't been able to provide much detail.
"People wanted to hurt me or put something in my food because I seemed to be the only thing in the way of other people winning," he said. In response to the threats, Gold's sponsor Bodog.com provided him with two burly round the clock bodyguards.
But after winning, the biggest headache of them all was just about to hit. A television producer, Bruce Crispin Leyser, then filed a lawsuit against Gold, claiming that he was entitled to half of Gold's winnings. Leyser says that they have had a gentleman's agreement to split the prize money even before the tournament started.
The accusation has prompted a judge in Las Vegas to temporarily freeze half of his $12 million prize money.
"It's sad what's happened around me, but I still look at this as a huge accomplishment," he said last month.
